ABOUT THE AUTHORS

“MAYER NUDELL is a former U.S. diplomat who served in El Salvador and Nicaragua from
1976 to 1980. Subsequently, he held numerous positions at the Department of State,
including two years in the Office of Counterterrorism and Emergency Planning, where he was
responsible for Latin American and Middle Eastern matters and for liaison with the law
enforcement, business, and intelligence communities.

“Now an independent consultant, he advises governmental, law enforcement, and business
organizations on all facets of crisis management, contingency planning, counterterrorism,
and
related matters. He is also an instructor at the General Services Administration's Training
Center and an adjunct faculty member at the Center for Advanced Police Studies. Before
joining the Foreign Service, he was an analyst for the Tunisian government's Ministry of
Planning.

“Mr. Nudell is a member of the American Foreign Service Association, the International
Counterterrorism and Security Association, the American Society for Industrial Security
(where he is Chairman of the Washington, D. C. chapter's Terrorist Activities
Subcommittee),
and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He is also the Chairman of the Public
Safety and Human Relations Advisory Commission of the City of Falls Church, Virginia.

“NORMAN ANTOKOL, a former political science professor, is a foreign service officer. His
overseas service includes tours in Caracas, London, Bridgetown, Barbados, and with the
Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai. For two years he was the public affairs
officer
for the State Department's Office of Counterterrorism and Emergency Planning, as well as
holding the aviation, European, and African portfolios. At publication time, he was scheduled
to become deputy coordinator for political training at the School of Professional Studies of
the Department of State's Foreign Service Institute, the training school for the U.S.
diplomatic
corps. In that capacity, he will teach political tradecraft to U.S. diplomats and coordinate the
teaching of ancillary subjects.
