THE GREY HOUSE HOMELAND SECURITY DIRECTORY
2006 Edition “The Federal Department of Homeland Security section goes beyond the function of a compendium of contact information, though it does that extremely well. This section delivers a perspective of this complex organization that few could duplicate. Every level of this organization is described with a clarity and brevity that is refreshing. My understanding of DHS grew as a result of using this resource. I spent hours on line in an attempt to gather similar information. While I am rather practiced at surfing the Internet I was challenged to find even a small percentage of the information provided in this section. While searching on line I spent the majority of my time sifting through informational undergrowth before finding the data equivalent of a morel mushroom. Those who have hunted the elusive morels know satisfaction of each discovery. This section provides a bushel basket of morels. This section is a must have for anyone who is a preparedness service/product provider, or engaged in emergency response, business continuity and disaster recovery planning.” - -Emergency Management & Protection/First Services - - - - - - - - “Here is an easy-to-use guide to the newly formed Department of Homeland Security and the various governmental, private, and nonprofit organizations that support it. Nearly 800 pages of directory information divided into five sections include federal agencies, state agencies, private company profiles, industry resources, and indexes to key personnel and products and services. The federal agency section contains 40 pages outlining the Department of Homeland Security. Entries include a description of each office, top officials, and standard directory information of address, phone, fax, and occasional URLs and e-mail addresses... The Grey House Homeland Security Directory compiles this information in one place and is discerning in content. A useful purchase for public and academic libraries.” - Booklist - - - - - - - - “Published after the establishment of the newest cabinet post, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), this five-part reference contains directory information for that body and the governmental, private and nonprofit organizations that support it. ... Useful as an already compiled source for organization and company information. Nicely designed with clear type, it is significantly cheaper than the only other extant work on this subject, the Directory of Homeland Security.” - Library Journal - - - - - - - - “A nice feature is the inclusion of a brief description for many entries whereby the mission is couched in terms of homeland security issues. The “Companies” and “Industry Resources” sections will meet the needs of individuals involved with or hoping to break into the expanding industry surrounding homeland security... [the book’s] timeliness of subject matter and ease-of-use make it a nice resource for select libraries providing information to business clientele.” - ARBA - - - - - - - - “More than 2,600 entries in this directory provide access to a variety of useful information. Federal and state agencies, relevant professional associations, companies specializing in homeland security products, as well as lists of resources like databases and periodicals, are covered. The entries contain snail and email addresses, fax and phone numbers, Web page addresses, and the names of key individuals as well as their positions. In addition, there are brief descriptions, or profiles for many of the entries. Of course, a lot of this information is on the Web if you know where to look, but that is the problem, where do you look? And even when you find the information, you will be hard pressed to find it all in one convenient location. The directory’s value is that it compiles related homeland security information in a single, easy to use print package. In addition, it points the way to related electronic information in terms of agency, company and association Web addresses...” - Against the Grain - - - - - - - - Access thousands of contacts and resources for Homeland Security information and resources with The Grey House Homeland Security Directory. Please refer to the Table of Contents for specific chapter arrangement. The headquarters is the first listing in each chapter, and is gray-shaded for quick recognition. All Federal listings have a list of key officials - many of them with a direct phone number and e-mail. SECTION TWO: STATE AGENCIES The 868 listings in Section Two are arranged in alphabetical state chapters. The first listing in each state is the Main Homeland Security Office, and includes the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General and the person most responsible for homeland security. As with the Federal officials, many State officials have a direct phone number and e-mail. Following the gray-shaded Main Homeland Security Office listing, each state chapter is comprised of agencies with homeland security responsibility. You will find Emergency Management and State Police, Hazardous Materials Teams and Environmental Epidemiology Departments. The listings are arranged in alphabetical order, for easy access. As with the first edition, there is still inconsistency among states in regard to the attention paid to homeland security, resulting in a varying number of listings from state to state.
